I can’t believe I have missed telling you all regarding this one very primary golf instructional move.
I have skirted all around it for years now, but a real life experience has shown me that even the most many times talked when it comes to golf swing move may be made to sound very complicated.
I want to un-complicate the ” magic move.” If you want to hit the golf ball with authority and maintain great angles through affect you have to do this one move correctly.
So here it is, it’s the SLOT.
It is the one place that the golf club perfectly will have to go in order to get a good path and angle of attack on the golf ball. It is what Harvey Penick talked regarding in his ” Little Red Book “
It’s what Ben Hogan wouldn’t talk regarding because of the wonderment of his outstanding golf swing. And the pent up secrecy of his magic move. Kinda funny now.
It’s the SLOT.
First, let’s make sure we are 100% in agreement that there is never just one move in a golf swing that solves all the problems. There are a few moves that ought to be done in order to even think with regards to improvement. This is one of those moves, please do not think that it will heal all. It won’t.
But, it will go a long ways to making sure you make one of the most indispensable moves in the swing. If you may get the club in ” the slot” on your down swing you have an splendid prospect of making outstanding contact at impact. And the results will be veritably amazing.
So here goes, recompense attention. Explaining this is not going to easy. Making the move will be easier.
I was playing a round the other day and found that I just was not hitting the ball with that crisp solid feeling. The ball was not reacting well and I was off target galore and it just didn’t feel right. I played like dog crap all day. I couldn’t wait to get to the range.
It took two days before I got to the range to deal with the swing. I oftentimes find that if galore time goes by I will have not much to do to repair what is broke.
Not the case this time. Same thing. It just did not feel right. And the ball was still not reacting well at all.
I always go back to basi principles first. Grip, set-up, alignment, angles and so on.
Check, check, check !
Nothing! Now I’m worried. Poor contact lousy balance. Was that a shank? Ooooooh man !
Feelings ? Frustrated, worried, shocked and amazed, mad, confused, getting madder, more frustrated, I tell myself to get over it and get down to business, and I do, but not without still being very angry inside.
Since I feel that my backswing is always the same, I tend to look at the down move first.
I like to take it to the top and then tardily work the club into the respective positions that I feel are very essential to my ( and your ) golf swing. All the way to affect and then to finish.
SLOW ! And I do not hit a ball. I use it as a reminder as to where the club is supposed to go and where my body elements are supposed to be in concert with the club.
Suddenly, I detect that I could actually see the ” SLOT.”
WOW!
Maybe I need to both see it and feel it.
So I begun to work on making sure that the club got into the slot. I used little swings, short backswing, into the slot and hit. I dropped my right elbow straight into the front of my turned right hip bone. Not behind it, rather in front of it, I in truth tried to brush my elbow into that bone on the front of my right hip.
This works……….. and it fixed my condition for the moment.
So where is the slot, exactly?
Try this: get in a good set up position. Now draw an imaginative line from the front of the ball, back through the ball to your right ( not for lefties) and for notwithstanding far you want the line to go.
You must be standing parallel to this line. That is your toes, your knees, your hips, and your chest and shoulders must be parallel to this line.
Can you visualize the line?
If you can, now take note of the kinship of your right hip and the line, and your right shoulder and the line. It is specially necessary that you note the distance that now exists from the line to these body points.
Got it?
If you get this, you will note that there is near equivalent distance from the line to these body parts.
Now turn your right shoulder as if in a backswing, as you do this, your right hip will turn less than your shoulder but turn nevertheless.
Got it?
Now…………. Note the new distance from the line to your right shoulder and you right hip.
This new distance, the area amidst the line and your right hip and right shoulder while turned into the backswing is ” THE SLOT “
Now, to prove this to yourself, try this.
Take a set up position with a club like an 8 iron. Without bending your arms, pick the club up toward your chest, just use your hands only. Do not bend your arms up not one tiny bit. The club will have to be at near parallel to the ground.
It does not have to be perfect. But do not bend your arms.
Now turn your shoulders to the right as if in a backswing and let the club go with you. You ought to turn sufficient so that the club is still parallel to the ground and now parallel to the line.
Remember the line, right?
The emplacement of the club now in this new position is ” THE SLOT”
The club ought to go through this precise position on your downswing, each single time from this point forward. Do what ever it takes to make sure it gets there.
Start with little swings, slow and deliberate. Check and double check.

Top golfing instructor Jim McLean shares the mystery to a better swing and a better game

- Written by the author of the classic book The 8-Step Swing, named one of the 20th Century’s top 15 golf instructionals by Sports Illustrated
This book helps you get out of a golfing rut, get locked in to your slot, and find the sweet spot in your game.
From the Inside Flap
What’s the single greatest divergence amid a professional golfer’s swing and yours? Why is it that the pros’ swings deliver such consistent power and accuracy, while you and your buddies hook, top, shank, and rack up sufficient mulligans to make a stew? Is it just a matter of athletic ability? Or are the pros doing something you may learn to make the ball fly straighter and further each time you swing the club?
In The Slot Swing, Jim McLean, one of America’s most well-respected and sought-after golf instructors and a pioneer in using video to make an analyzation of the swing, shows how to swing a club using the same technique that made Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Nick Price, Lorena Ochoa, Jim Furyk, and Tiger Woods champions.
One of the firstborn things Jim noticed in his early video studies was that, contrary to established wisdom, none of the great golfers he studied had what was thought to be the “perfect” swing, in which the upstroke and downstroke were identical. But they did all have something in common, something that nearly all of the amateurs he studied lacked but could learn.
With the help of seventy-five amazing illustrations by Phil Franké, as well as a brilliant color foldout with illustrations of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, and other leading pros, Jim shows you how, in spite of marked deviations in backswing, all of the pros drop their clubs into a “slot” for the duration of transition. The clubshaft falls into the slot, supplying better control and increased club speed at the point of impact.
Jim helps you find your way into the slot using the classic swings of three great golfers as examples: three outstanding ball strikers using the three basic swing shapes. You’ll discover how Sergio Garcia gives rise to his seemingly effortless Standard Slot Swing, channel the astounding power of Sam Snead’s Reverse Slot Swing, and marvel at the near perfection of Tiger Woods’s paradoxical Single Plane Slot Swing.
Whichever of these powerful proficiencies suits you best, The Slot Swing will help you find the perfective downswing position that each pro hits and most amateurs miss. In no time, you’ll be hitting the ball further and straighter with any club, in any lie, with each swing you take.
From the Back CoverHow another “X Factor” may improve your swing and your game
When he begun applying video analysis to the swings of professional and novice golfers, Jim McLean speedily realized something: when he traced the plane of the clubshaft for the duration of the swing, the pros’ clubshafts, almost vertical at the three-quarter point of the backswing, were much flatter on the downswing, creating an X at the three-quarter point. No X’s showed up in the traces of the amateurs’ swings. In The Slot Swing, Jim shows you how to swing like a pro by dropping into the “slot” and making the X element work for you.
About the AuthorJim McLean has worked in the golf world for more than thirty years, twenty at Jim McLean Golf School in Doral, Florida, with top touring masters and recreational golfers. Beginning in 1977, he and his exploration partner, Carl Welty, initiated the use of video in analyzing the swings of both professional and novice golfers.
Phil Franké is widely recognized as the best golf instruction illustrator in the business today.

I finally found my Slot with this Book! By Devan T. Bonebrake I am a five handicap and have read an insurmountable amount of golf instruction books. However, I have never read a book that freed my mind up more than the Slot Swing. I have always though that the backswing was so important and that you had to swing it back on the same plane that it comes down on. The vivid pictures and great imagery in this book really helped me understand that all great players had their own way of finding the slot. I thought a lot about this and realized that I had always played my best when I felt like I took the club a little up going back and then dropped it back under coming down, but I always went away from it because I thought it was wrong. Jim McLean provides incredible evidence that there are three ways to find the slot and that there is no one perfect backswing!!!! I am so glad I ordered this book it has had a huge impact on my golf game. I highly recommend it.

Excellent By Sanin Saracevic I am a self-taught 11-handicap (20+ rounds in the 80s) after starting to play 11 months ago. During the never-ending process of trying to “figure” out the golf swing I stumbled upon many things that “worked” and many, many more that did not. This book discusses and explains many of the things I remember “discovering” but could not explain, recall properly, or repeat.

Finally the truth gets revealed! By Mark Radzichowsky Over the years I`ve purchased my share of golf instruction books sold on Amazon but never considered writing a review. This book is different because it holds the secret to the pro swing and it’s pictured right on the front cover.
