The unquestioned master of picture collages, Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948), was a German artisan with multiple natural abilities and qualities ranging from sculpture, painting, and installation art to music & poetry. His genre of collages, were collectively referred as ‘Merz Pictures.’ One of Kurt’s firstborn works in collage, “Merz Picture 32 A. The Cherry Picture,” stands out as a model work belonging to his pioneering art. It came into existence at the time when Schwitters started out venturing with the philosophies of the rebellious and non-conformist ‘Dada Movement.’ Created in the year 1921, “Merz Picture 32 A. The Cherry Picture,” is a 91.8cm X 70.5cm collage, set in respective media, including cork, wood, paper, cloth, metal, ink, oil paints, and pencil sketch. This abstract piece is presently displayed at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The distinguishable feature of “Merz Picture 32 A. The Cherry Picture,” is the representation of a very simple central idea (a bunch of cherries) versus the backdrop of a highly articulate design. The entire work is installed versus a hard cardboard surface that facilitates the clipping of the miscellaneous material, while permitting others to be glued to it. The central front piece is an old card, on which a bunch of cherries is printed. It appears to be a share of a necessary school learning series. This card is also the singular well-lit object in the collage, making it a real eye-catcher. Cherries symbolize newness and freshness, being among the initial fruits of the season, and signify ‘life’ in Schwitters’ “Merz Picture 32 A. The Cherry Picture.” The heavy background employs the use of largely discarded material. The basi layer is that of randomly arranged cloth, for the most part the little pieces of rug, used thick fabrics, and a great deal of synthetic pieces. It is further mottled with torn newspaper, galore brand labels, and papers with writing print. Schwitters has added a curious blend of unorthodox and classic appeal to his collage through the placement of arbitrarily shaped (roughly resembling a golf club) wood over the left hand top of the card of cherries, juxtaposed with an old and worn out cigar pipe. Over the right hand top of the card, there is a cork from a wine bottle, installed to add an aesthetic appeal to the work. The subtle differences in meaning or opinion or attitude of the ‘Abstract Art’ and form have been a subject of interest for the viewers and the critics alike. “Merz Picture 32 A. The Cherry Picture,” presents it is cynicism in the most artistic way, without offense, claiming it is undisputed place amidst the lead works of present times.
