Small Flash Better Results that Matter

Bill has done a excellent job covering this burgeioing topic of small flash photography. With the growth of the off camera movement, it is good to have a book that helps you doing the following.1. Give you a good overview of the basic’s 2. Explain how to use the technology and what is best and when to use it. Bill’s book makes a good companion to a number of those that are out there. Read this book chapter by chapter as they build on each other. We took the information in Chapter 6 for example and recreated it with similar results. If you want a book to help you produce Results that matter then consider this book.

Offered me some new nuggets to keep in mind when using flash

I have a few books on lighting, but as I experiment, and work to building up my experience and comfort level, I always appreciate new information, or a different perspective, and that’s exactly what this book delivered. Having read through it once, I will definitely keep it handy for reference and review. I found Chapter 7 especially helpful. There were written breakdowns of the basic lighting setups where Hurter does a great job of summarizing, and adding things to keep in mind when shooting in certain conditions, or what features on a subject you should notice when considering which lighting set up to go with. He does cover the basics, but also offers some techniques or tricks I hadn’t seen before. The title does say, “Small Flash” but many of the sample set ups utilize one or two larger studio strobes. This is especially true in Chapter 6 where the author discusses multiple-light techniques, and he highlights the work of Christian LaLonde. If you have 9 or 10 speedlights in your arsenal, then this chapter is definitely for you. I don’t, but I still enjoyed the examples and explanations. There was still useful information that I gleaned from it even if I don’t ever plan to mimic Mr. LaLonde’s techniques.

Having said that, I always want at least one new toy after reading a photography book. I’ve got one speedlight and two studio strobes. Thanks to Mr. Hurter, I now have the strong desire to pick up at least one more speedlight and seeing what options this opens up for me.
